I found myself lounging in the old armchair in the corner of the living room, trying to alleviate a severe headache. Everyone else was either cleaning up from dinner or getting ready for our usual board game night.
We had a simple rule: all phones were placed in a small wooden box during game time to keep everyone engaged. The box was right beside me, and I was resting in the quiet moment after the games.

A phone in the box started buzzing. Once, twice, and then continuously. Overcome by curiosity, I reached for it, trying to recall if we had any specific rules about checking messages. I was fairly sure we didn’t, so I thought checking wouldn’t hurt.
As I picked up the phone, its screen displayed a commonplace sunset wallpaper—nothing noteworthy. But the notifications on the screen—I wish I had looked away.
Displayed prominently was a photo of my MIL, Mandy, in lingerie. My heart raced; she’s always so refined and well-dressed, yet here she was, posing like a model from a lingerie advertisement.
I assumed it was Dean’s, my father-in-law’s phone. They’ve been married a long time, and perhaps this was their way of keeping the romance alive. It was unsettling, but I guessed it was just their private business.
But before I could even digest the image, my dad entered the room, seemingly searching for something. He looked over at the box, his expression turning to concern.
“Hey, have you seen my phone?” he asked, looking around the room.
I held up the buzzing device, trying to keep my expression neutral. “This one?”
He smiled with relief. “Yeah, that’s mine.”
